Adding metol enhance contrast radiographic results

Abstract

Background: Dental radiograph is important to make a good diagnosis of disease. But in general cases found there are lots of dental radiograph quite dissapointing in quality that make it difficult to read. This situation may caused by faulty in film processing and low quality developer material. One of developer material that important to contrast radiograph is Hydroquinone and Metol. Purpose: To determine the right concentration of Hydroquinone and Metol in developer to get the best contrast in radiography. Method: This study used sample taken randomly from patients in radiology dental faculty dentistry of Airlangga Univercity. Each person was taken 3 times dental radiogram. They used apron to minimize radiation. Exposure time was 0.6 s. Periapical film was processed using 3 different developer solution. First group film was processed with proportion developer solution of Hydroquinone and Metol was 1 : ¼. Second group was processed with proportion developer solution of Hydroquinone and Metol was 1 : 2/3. The last group was processed with proportion developer solution of Hydroquinone and Metol was 1 : 1. Result: Radiograph film processed with proportion developer solution of Hydroquinone and Metol was 1 : 1 showed the highest film contrast. Conclusion : Added Metol in developer solution is effective to increase the contrast of film in radiography
