Caries activity following topical application of 1.23% Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride (APF) gel in children

Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose of the study was to examine caries activity of children before and after Fluoride gel topical application. Subject were students of Mardi Putra Elementary School Surabaya with criterias as follow, 10-12 years old, DMF-t index were 3-6, no gingivitis and periodontal disease, and no experience of topical fluoride application. Subjects were divided into experiment group which received topical fluoride gel (10 children) and control group which received scaling and prophylaxis (10 children). Gel fluoride APF 1.23% (Sultan Topex) and Cariostat (Sankin Cariostat System, Tokyo) were used in the study. Caries activity test were done before treatment in experiment group and control group using cariostat. After 3 and 30 days following the treatments in both groups, caries activity test were checked. Data were statistically tested using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney Test. Caries activity test results showed significance difference between before and after 3 and 30 days following treatment in experiment group, and there was a significance difference of caries activity between experiment group and control group after 30 days following topical fluoride gel. The study showed that caries activity decreased after 30 days of topical fluoride gel.
