Abstract

Background: Dental caries is one of the major human diseases caused by the oral microbial flora. Streptococcus mutans is the main bacteria causing dental caries. Previous studies have suggested that probiotics in dairy products may affect oral ecology and plays a role in the maintenance of oral health. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of probiotics Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Materials and Method: Probiotics Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum were tested for their antimicrobial activity of its metabolit products on Streptococcus mutans growth using agar diffusion method with paper disc in MRS agar. Results: The presence of antimicrobial activity were shown by inhibition zone which formed around paper discs contained with metabolit products of Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum in the agar plates. No inhibition zone were formed in the control plate which paper discs contained with non-probiotic milk. Conclusion: Probiotics Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum have inhibition effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans which is the main bacteria causing tooth caries.
