Longan seed extract (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) as foaming agent in toothpaste

Abstract

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is usually used as detergent or foaming agent in tooth paste formulation, but it has several side effect such as recurrent apthous stomatitis (RAS), mouth irritation, decreasing saliva solubility, heavy ulceration, and changes in taste sensitivity. The other material that can be alternative as foaming agent is saponin, because saponin can also produce stable foam. Longan seed (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) contains saponin that has a potential possibility to replace the SLS function as foaming agent. Previous research had found that the concentration of longan seed extract 6.25% did not show any toxic effect on fibroblast cell culture BHK-21 and still in the safety limit. Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine whether the longan seed extract 6.25% can be used as a foaming agent in toothpaste. Methods: There were 2 controls and 1 treatment group, toothpaste without SLS, toothpaste with SLS 1.5%, toothpaste with longan seed extract 6.25% were experimented on horizontal brushing machine with 130 rotations/minute at 2 minutes and then observed by the method of measuring the volume of foam. The data would be analyzed statistically by using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. Results: There were significant differences between three groups of toothpaste. Toothpaste without SLS did not produce any foam, toothpaste with SLS 1.5% produce much foam and toothpaste with longan seed extract 6.25% produce some foam. Conclusion: Foam in toothpaste with longan seed extract 6.25% can be used as a foaming agent

Abstrak

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) adalah bahan yang banyak digunakan dalam formulasi sediaan pasta gigi sebagai deterjen atau foaming agent, namun SLS mempunyai efek samping seperti recurrent apthous stomatitis (RAS), iritasi rongga muiut, menurunnya kelamtan saliva, ulserasi yang parah, dan perubahan sensitivitas rasa. Bahan lain yang mempunyai fungsi yang sama seperti SLS adalah saponin, karena saponin mempunyai busa yang stabil. Biji lengkeng (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) mengandung saponin yang berpotensi untuk menggantikan fungsi SLS sebagai foaming agent. Penelitian sebelumnya disebutkan bahwa konsentrasi ekstrak biji lengkeng 6,25% tidak menunjukkan adanya efek toksik terhadap kultur sel fibroblas BHK-21 dan masih dalam batas aman. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ekstrak biji lengkeng (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) 6,25% dapat digunakan sebagai foaming agent dalam pasta gigi. Metode: Terdapat 2 kontrol dan 1 kelompok perlakuan, diantaranya pasta gigi tanpa SLS, pasta gigi dengan SLS 1,5%, dan pasta gigi dengan ekstrak biji lengkeng 6,25% diuji pada alat penyikat horizontal dengan 130 putaran/menit selama 2 menit kemudian diamati berdasarkan metode pengukuran volume busa. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik Kruskal-Wallis dan Mann-Whitney. Hasil: Penelitian ini terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara 3 kelompok pasta gigi. Pasta gigi tanpa SLS tidak terdapat busa, pasta gigi dengan SLS 1,5% terdapat busa banyak dan pasta gigi dengan ekstrak biji lengkeng 6,25% terdapat busa sedikit. Simpulan: Ekstrak biji lengkeng 6,25% dapat digunakan sebagai foaming agent dalam pasta gigi
