Abstract

Background: malocclusion is still one of the major oral health problems in Indonesia (85,3%), especially in children’s oral health. There are many factors that can lead to the occurrence of malocclusion in children. Besides the genetic or hereditary factor, behavioral factor has an important role in the occurrence of malocclusion. This behavior is not only the actions of maintaining the oral health but also doing bad oral habits. If bad oral habits in children continued until the age when permanent teeth begin to grow, it would lead to malocclusion. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge and bad oral habits with the incidence of malocclusion in students of SMP Negeri 18 Surabaya. Methods: This study was a cross sectional study conducted on 136 respondents. The analysis of data was processed with crosstabs table and Chi Square test using SPSS. Results: The analysis showed that there was no relationship between knowledge and bad oral habits with the incidence of malocclusion in students of SMP Negeri 18 Surabaya (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study was no relationship between knowledge and bad oral habits with the incidence of malocclusion in students of SMP Negeri 18 Surabaya.
