Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus viridans have been found in the cultures of blood infection after tooth extractions.The using of local and systemic antibiotic may cause some side effects for the patients and some of those antibiotics are resistant, so that need an alternative. Hump of Banana Ambon has been used by the population of Trunyan Bali to accelerate bleeding,to prevent wound infection and to cure tooth pain. Based on the research, Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum hump contains several active compounds such as flavonoid, tannin and saponin. They can be used to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Purpose: To acknowledge the inhibition of Banana Ambon (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) hump extract in the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus viridans. Methods: Using diffusion disk method. The plate was given paperdish contains 100 % extract concentration, 50 % extract concentration, 25 % extract concentration, 12,5 % extract concentration , 6,25 % extract concentration, 3,125 % extract concentration, positive control (amoxcycilin) and negative control. Results: All of concentration of Banana Ambon hump extract could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Only 100 % extract concentration could inhibit the growth of Streptococcus viridans but in low diameters. Conclusion: Banana Ambon (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) hump extract could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus but not for Steptococcus viridans
